MLB: Oakland loses next performer

The Oakland Athletics are currently collecting one bad news after another. While Brett Anderson is now on the Disabled List, the prognosis for Sean Manaea is gloomy.

A few days ago the A’s left-handers placed Manaea with tendinitis in the rotator cuff of the left shoulder on the DL, now another left-hander followed with Anderson. The latter suffered a strain of the forearm.

The A’s didn’t want to rule out Manaeas return in September, but a premature end of the season is possible. “It depends when he feels good enough and starts his bracing program. And then the question is how long it takes him to throw the ball, bullpen sessions and so on,” said manager Bob Melvin, plotting the way for a possible comeback. “But obviously we’ll be careful with him, so I’m not sure there’s time.”

Manaea was so far the only starter of the A’s who had not landed on the DL at least once this year.

Anderson, on the other hand, gave five runs in 2 2/3 innings in the Houston Astros game on Monday and was then replaced. On Tuesday he also landed on the DL, for the second time this season. How long it will fail will only become clear after detailed tests in the coming days.
