MLB: Former MVP goes to New York

The New York Yankees sign Outfielder Andrew McCutchen. The Bronx Bombers have reportedly agreed a trade with the San Francisco Giants. In exchange, two prospects go to the Bay Area.

One of the talents is Infielder Abiatal Avelino, while the second name is not yet known. McCutchen had only switched from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Giants in the off-season via Trade.

McCutchen beat .255 this season with 15 home runs and 55 RBI (13 stolen bases) in 130 games for San Francisco. In New York he is to supplement an outfield that is plagued by numerous injuries. Last but not least, superstar Aaron Judge has been out of action with a wrist fracture for over a month.

McCutchen will probably start as he did in San Francisco in the Right Field and thus relieve Giancarlo Stanton, who was suffering from thigh problems. This should therefore continue to function mainly as a designated hitter.

McCutchen was the National League MVP 2013 in the service of the Pirates and was the face of the franchise for many years. Now he joins the acting MVP of the NL, Stanton.

McCutchen is in the last year of a six-year contract he signed with the Pirates in 2012. It is expected that the Giants will take over part of the outstanding salary of approximately three million dollars – about one million of which will be paid by the Pirates anyway.

McCutchen had previously passed the Trade Waiver Wire and was not requested by any team. So it was possible to trade him to every team in the league. Since the transfer took place in August, McCutchen would also be eligible to play in the playoffs for New York.
