MLB: New York pulls starters out of circulation

For Starting Pitcher Zack Wheeler the season is over prematurely. The New York Mets announced the decision on Wednesday. However, this is merely a precautionary measure to protect right-handers for the future.

The Mets “probably do the best” for Wheeler by saving him the last two starts of the season, said manager Mickey Callaway on Wednesday. Wheeler pitched almost 100 innings more in 2018 than last year.

“I feel like I played a good season,” Wheeler said: “I would have liked to finish the season on a regular basis, but since I’ve achieved nearly 100 innings more than last year after doing almost nothing in the previous two and a half years, it makes sense not to overdo it.

Wheeler missed two full seasons after a Tommy John Surgery in 2015 and made 17 starts over 86 1/3 innings for the Mets in 2017. This year it was 182 1/3 innings in 29 starts after he started the season in Triple-A. He is 12-7 this year with a 3.31 ERA and 179 strikeouts.

Overall, the Mets are very pleased with Wheeler’s first full season in three years. Callaway was accordingly optimistic for the future: “Hopefully this year will be a springboard for his future career.
