MLB: Toronto lets manager move after end of season

The Toronto Blue Jays will be separating from manager John Gibbons at the end of the season. The team officially announced this on Wednesday.

“Ultimately, we decided that it was time for a new approach, a new voice,” said General Manager Ross Atkins.

In his total of two times as manager of the Blue Jays, Gibbons achieved a balance of 792-787, putting him in second place in the franchise for manager victories and manager games. Only Cito Gaston lies in front of him.

“I’ve been here a long time and I agree it’s probably time for a change,” said Gibbons, who received standing ovations from the crowd before his last home game on Wednesday against Houston (3-1 Toronto). “We’re rebuilding here, and I think I’m actually the perfect guy for a rebuild. But I don’t know if I necessarily have the energy,” Gibbons admitted.

“I’ve had some great times and also some tougher times. Somewhere it’s sad, but it also brought back many good memories. I never cry, I won’t cry either, but my lip might shake a little.”
