The Boston Red Sox won game 4 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees 4:3 and thus reached the ALCS for the first time since 2013. The landlords made a late comeback, but it was too late.
With runners on 1 and 2 and two outs, Gleyber Torres beat a ground ball to Third Baseman Eduardo Nunez, who fired to the first base in the most distress. There Steve Pearce had to stretch a lot, but somehow managed to keep his foot on base while he caught the ball. Video Replay confirmed that Out and Boston was celebrating.
The game started with two innings without a run, before the Red Sox came up in the third. A Sacrifice Fly by J.D. Martinez put the guests in the lead against CC Sabathia (3 IP, 5 H, 3 ER), for whom it could have been the last performance ever in the Bronx. This was followed by an RBI double by Ian Kinsler and an RBI single by Nunez to 3-0 for Boston.
The Red Sox then went up against Reliever Zach Britton: Christian Vazquez made it to 4:0 with Solo-Homerun, while the Yankees only managed their first run in the fifth inning – a Sac Fly from Brett Gardner against starter Rick Porcello (5 IP, 4 H, ER).
Then the Yankees bite their teeth out at the Red Sox bullpen. The eighth inning even pitched Ace Chris Sale, who like his predecessors Matt Barnes and Ryan Brasier pitched a perfect inning.
Like in game 1 New York made it exciting again shortly before the end. Against Closer Craig Kimbrel it loaded the bases and scored two more runs by a hit-by-pitch against Neil Walker and a Sac Fly by Gary Sanchez. That’s all there was.
The Red Sox will thus have their chance to a revenge against the Houston Astros, who failed them in four matches in the ALDS last year. Game 1 of the ALCS will take place on the night of Sunday (2.09 a.m.) at Fenway Park.
