Terry Rozier celebrated his breakthrough at the Boston Celtics last season, but with Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart the Celtics are already paying a lot of money for their point guard position. Nevertheless, the franchise apparently wants to extend early with Rozier as well.
Rozier will be Restricted Free Agent after the upcoming season in which he earns a good $3 million and is considered a guard with a lot of potential who is permanently probably too good for a backup role. Boston, of course, has recognized this as well.
According to the Boston Sports Journal, the Celtics are therefore “actively” in negotiations and are currently trying to sign a long-term contract with Rozier before the deadline of 15 October. According to the report, the 24-year-old could demand up to 15 million dollars a year – but Boston is already paying 20 million for Kyrie Irving and 11 million for Marcus Smart. Irving will also become a Free Agent after the coming season and has already stressed that he wants to stay in Boston. The superstar should then earn even more than in the coming year.
“Scary Terry” had attracted a lot of attention last season, especially in the playoffs, when he represented the injured Irving well especially in home games and played over 19 games 16.5 points and 5.7 assists on average. Now Irving is fit again, but Rozier should still play a major role: “I have to figure out how to get him as many minutes as possible,” coach Brad Stevens said last week. “He’s great and he works harder than anyone.”
In the long run, however, it could become an issue whether Rozier accepts a role as a backup in the long run. The Guard himself recently admitted that he was thinking about it. In the course of the offseason, the Phoenix Suns in Boston have reportedly already asked, among others, because they would like to make Rozier their starter on one.
