MLB: Urgestein still one year to go

The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed with Pitcher Adam Wainwright on a new one-year contract. The starter returns to St. Louis for his 15th season in the MLB.

“Adam represents everything we think of when we talk about a winner,” Cardinal Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. “His value for our team goes far beyond the boxing score. And he showed at the end of the season that he is still able to face the competition.”

Wainwright took fifth place in the franchise with 148 wins and second place with 1623 strikeouts. Due to elbow and thigh problems he only had eight starts in 2018 and was 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA.

“If you had asked me that two months ago, I would have gone long ago,” Wainwright said when asked about his last start this season if he wanted to continue pitching, adding: “But the way I feel now, it would be hard for me to go if that was my last start.

Wainwright won the World Series twice with the Cardinals. 2006 as Closer in his rookie season and 2011, but without his help, as he missed the year due to a Tommy John Surgery injury.
