MLB: Rangers-Manager: Interview for Ex-Champ

According to several media reports, Joe Girardi had an interview for the Texas Rangers vacant managerial position. Girardi worked for the New York Yankees for ten years.

According to this, Girardi was the first Rangers candidate with experience as a manager in the big leagues. The other candidates are said to have been Brandon Hyde and Joe Espada, the bench coaches of the Cubs and Astros respectively. The Assistant General Manager of the Rangers, Jayce Tingler, was also allowed to audition.

Girardi won the World Series with the Yankees in his second season in 2009 and totaled 910-710 in his ten seasons in the Bronx from 2008 to 2017, most recently reaching the ALCS 2017 with New York, and then being an expert on the MLB Network in 2018.

Girardi, who celebrated his 54th birthday on Sunday, also played in the MLB for 15 years and won the World Series three times with the Yankees. Through this the former catcher was active for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Rangers had separated at the end of 2018 from Jeff Banister, who was named Manager of the Year for the American League in his first season in 2015 and won the AL West in 2015 and 2016 with Texas. In the last two seasons, however, the Rangers had only negative balances.
