Stephen Curry has once again caused enthusiasm in the NBA and swept the Washington Wizards with 51 points from the home Oracle Arena. After the game, he explained the scenes on the floor and why it was one of the funniest games of his career. Bradley Beal on the other hand revealed the only concept to stop curry in such a night.
“It was just one of those games where you have fun playing basketball,” Curry remained modest after the game. “I took a few brave throws and tried to help the team as long as I was on the floor.”
His teammates did not remain quite as reserved. Kevin Durant found it “a pleasure to be on the floor with him.” Steve Kerr was also impressed by the incredible performance of his protégé: “You’re standing there at the side line, you see your player almost throwing from the middle line and you think ‘Yes, that’s a good throw’. It was just incredible today, it was like a video game.”
In the past, the Warriors have shown that they know how to feed a player like no other team when it gets hot (see Thompson’s 37-point quarter against the Kings). When Curry was on 16 points and four threes after just ten minutes, his teammates even had to stop him from passing the ball.
“The last threesome in the first quarter was probably the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in the NBA,” Curry explained. “Even as I was standing at the free-throw line, two guys from our team screamed ‘Don’t play! Don’t play!’ That went through my head when I ran forward and threw – luckily the ball went in.”
As an opponent, you can get desperate at such an appearance of the double MVP. Opponent John Wall was powerless after the game: “Every bad throw is a good throw for him.” Also his backcourt partner Bradley Beal had no defensive answer. After the game he said, relatively pecked, “We’ll just have to foul him more often.” But in view of the 10 out of 10 free throws that would not have been the best of all ideas.
Wizards coach Scott Brooks even missed the red-white-blue balls, following the example of the Harlem Globetrotters. Apart from the colour of the balls, the only difference on this Wednesday evening was that it was not a highlight show with actors, but a regular season game in the NBA. But Stephen Curry offered at least as many highlights.
