MLB: Decision postponed: Star keeps L.A. waiting

Clayton Kershaw gets one more day to decide his immediate future. The pitcher agreed with the Los Angeles Dodgers to postpone the deadline for his decision to opt out of his current contract to Friday at 9pm CET. That’s what the team announced.

Kershaw signed a $215 million seven-year contract in 2014. The contract includes an exit clause for this winter and the original deadline for this decision was midnight from Wednesday to Thursday on the East Coast.

Under the current contract, the left-hander would still be entitled to 65 million dollars over two years. As ESPN speculates, this postponement is a sign that both sides could negotiate an extension of the existing contract and would need a little more time to do so.

On Sunday after game 5 of the World Series, Kershaw had said, “I haven’t made a decision yet.”

The only pitcher to have a higher average annual salary than Kershaw over the next two years is Zack Greinke, who is tied to the Arizona Diamondbacks for six years and $206.5 million.
