The BBWAA has chosen its MLB MVPs. In the American League, Jose Altuve of Houston Astros won the American League, while Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins won the National League by a very narrow margin.
With 405 points, Altuve clearly prevailed over Aaron Judge (279) of the Yankees and won the MVP award for the first time in his career. Altuve had led the AL with a. 346 Batting Average and 204 hits. He also won 101 victories with the Astros, the second most in the AL.
“I don’t know what to say,”Altuve admitted to the MLB Network,”I didn’t expect it. That’s terrific. I want to thank God, my family sitting next door and all my team mates. I think my team mates made this possible for me. They made me an MVP and I am so happy, I almost want to cry with happiness. I don’t know what to do, but I didn’t expect it. I want to congratulate Aaron Judge and Jose Ramirez on a great season.”
Ramirez (Cleveland Indians) was third in the election with 237 points. Judge once again congratulated Altuve fair via Twitter:”M-V-P! No one deserves more than you! Congratulations on an unforgettable 2017!”
In the National League, on the other hand, voters were not in agreement. Stanton scored 302 points, only two more than Joey Votto from the Cincinnati Reds. Both got ten votes for the first place, but Stanton had ten for second place, Votto only nine. Paul Goldschmidt (Arizona Diamondbacks) received 239 votes.
Stanton caused a sensation with 59 home runs, beating most of the MLB for eleven years. In addition, the outfielder managed to score 132 RBI, most of them in the MLB. His 1,007 OPS was also the second best in the NL.
“It’s almost like a start-from-new-moment. You remember the thoughts you had as a child and the times when things were going well or badly as a pro, the Minor League time and everything that led to this point. And I will have more time to think about everything that has happened in the last seasons and I’m looking forward to a new trip”, said Stanton after his narrow success.
While Stanton is the first MVP in history for the Marlins, Altuve is the second MVP of the Astros, but the first in the American League. In 1994 First Baseman and Hall-of-Famer Jeff Bagwell won the National League Award for Houston.
