NFL: Big Packer Break: Thompson and Capers are out of the game

The Green Bay Packers are known for being one of the most inactive teams in the off-season – in almost every respect. But that’s over now: After defensive coordinator Dom Capers had to resign, the position of managing director is also being filled.

It was a big surprise at the end of Monday evening: As NFL network insider Ian Rapoport reports, Green Bay’s long-standing managing director Ted Thompson will be given a new role internally and the Packers will begin their search for a new managing director in the near future. Thompson has held the post since 2005 – the year in which the Packers drafted Aaron Rodgers.

However, Thompson had repeatedly been publicly criticized in the past few years, because the packers in the Free Agency were reluctant or not at all to address obvious weak points. At the same time, Green Bay was one of his most consistent teams when it came to nurturing his own talents.

The past season was dominated by Aaron Rodgers’ injury, which the team could not compensate for. This was also due to a once again desolate defensive season, which despite individual quality, especially in critical moments (Third Down, Fourth Down, Red Zone) was one of the worst defensive divisions in the league.

This ultimately led to the dismissal of defensive coordinator Dom Capers after nine years in office. According to initial reports, the Packers are supposed to look for an internal solution, but also names like Vic Fangio (Defensive Coordinator of the Bears last season) are circulating.
