NHL: Rangers beat Sabres in Winter Classic
The New York Rangers won the tenth Winter Classic NHL on New Year’s Day in front of a home crowd. In the open-air jubilee match, the four-time Stanley Cup winner in Citi Field in Queens won 3-2 (2-0,0-1,0-1,1-1,1-0) over Buffalo Sabres after extra time.
Paul Carey (5th) and Michael Grabner (9th) led the Rangers in the first period at the baseball stadium, where the New York Mets’ MLB team would otherwise play their home games. Sam Reinhart (21st) and Rasmus Ristolainen (41st) equalled with early hits in the second and third section, J. T. In the third minute of the overtime, Miller was responsible for the Rangers’ victory.
New York climbed to sixth place at the Eastern Conference, with the Sabres remaining last.
For both teams it was their second participation in the Winter Classic. The Rangers won at the Philadelphia Flyers in 2012 and Buffalo lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the premiere of the open-air spectacle in 2008.
