The fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia was a serious accident. An accompanying motorcyclist was run over by a car, the condition of the 48-year-old is unclear.

According to Italian media, a 60-year-old motorist broke through a barrier near Agrigent, the starting point of the fifth stage, and ran over the motorcyclist. The Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the accident victim lost his helmet and shoes.

With a cerebral hemorrhage and several rib fractures, the motorcyclist was delivered to a hospital. Some media have already reported that he succumbed to his injuries, but the giro organizers denied this.

Seven years ago, a fatal accident occurred at the Giro d’Italia near Rapallo. The Belgian professional cyclist had touched a wall at about 75 km/h, while he looked around back and hit his face on the road.
