Boxing: Golovkin and Alvarez agree on rematch

Gennady Golovkin will rejoin the ring against Canelo Alvarez on 15 September. After tough negotiations, promoter Oscar De La Hoya announced a new date for the return match in May, which was last cancelled due to doping.

“I am happy that we will have a fight on September 15,” De La Hoya announced on Twitter. A few hours earlier, the promoter had mentioned that negotiations had been broken off after Golovkin’s side had missed a deadline.

Afterwards, however, the negotiations could be brought to a successful conclusion. According to the latest reports, a share of 42.5 percent was agreed for Golovkin, while Canelo will collect the rest of the sum generated.

The duel is to take place in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The first fight between Golovkin and Canelo had earned about 70 million dollars. The Kazakh would earn around 29.75 million dollars, while Canelo should be pleased with 40.25 million dollars. In September 2017, the two had separated in a draw.

A rematch had already been scheduled for May 2018, which Canelo had to cancel after two positive doping tests. The Mexican had been banned for six months from February, but was in treatment for most of the ban anyway due to a knee injury.
