After Markelle Fultz had met with several specialists in the past weeks, the Point Guard of the Philadelphia 76ers has now been diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Fultz will again be missing several weeks from his team.
Raymond Brothers, Fultz’s agent and attorney, told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the syndrome “affects the nerves between the neck and shoulder, resulting in disturbed movement and thus massively limits Markelles’ ability to throw a basketball.
Fultz has been struggling with problems on his right shoulder since his rookie season. The No.1 pick of 2017 was only 14 games on the NBA floor in its premiere season. The various injuries, which were apparently all related to the shoulder, were particularly noticeable in the throw of the 20-year-old.
In the current season, Fultz has also had to pause in several games, which is why Brothers announced a few weeks ago that the Point Guard would meet with several shoulder specialists.
“People said it was a mental problem. This is not the case,” said Brothers. “It is not possible that you are the No.1 pick and suddenly you are no longer able to lift your arm to throw. Something was wrong and now we know the answer to the problem.”
According to Woj sources, up to ten specialists recently examined Fultz’s shoulder before the diagnosis was made. Brothers also reports that a member of the Sixers medical team was present at the meetings.
Meanwhile, the franchise apparently assumes that Fultz will be cancelled for the next three to six weeks. Officially, Philly announced that the team would be missing him indefinitely. The syndrome is to be treated with physiotherapy, which Fultz will probably complete in Los Angeles.
