Olympics: IOC suspends Nuzman and NOK – Athletes allowed to compete at Olympics

For Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the air is getting thinner and thinner. On Friday, the IOC also responded to the persistent allegations of corruption against the now imprisoned head of the organization of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and suspended the 75 year-old as an honorary member of the IOC.

Nuzman has also been removed from the Coordination Commission for the Summer Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo. The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) was also suspended.

The IOC reported that some or all of the suspensions will be lifted as soon as the unsettled governance issues are satisfactorily answered.

The executive of the IOC thus followed a recommendation of its own ethics committee, which is now headed by the former Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon (73).

The executive has taken note of and discussed the investigation against Nuzman and, above all, the allegations about the award of the Olympic Games to Rio in 2009, it said in a communication.

Nuzman had been arrested by the Brazilian federal police on Thursday. The president of the National Olympic Committee is accused of money laundering and belonging to a criminal organization, as well as of buying votes for the 2016 Summer Games in the Brazilian metropolis.

However, the main focus of the investigation is the payment of at least two million dollars to Senegalese entrepreneur Papa Massata Diack a few days before the award of the 31st prize.Olympic Summer Games in October 2009.

The son of Lamine Diack, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with voting rights at that time as president of the World Athletics Federation, is said to have used the money to attract additional Africans to Rio’s side.

The IOC announced that besides Nuzman, the COB was also responsible for Rio’s application. As a result, the usual payments to the Brazilian Olympic Committee are initially frozen.

However, Brazil’s athletes are not affected by the measures, they could continue to play a team starting under the Brazilian flag and anthem at the February Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang/South Korea.

With regard to the continued financial demands of the Organizing Committee in 2016, the IOC stated that it had fulfilled all its commitments to Rio.The financial participation would even have exceeded the contractual obligations.

Rio 2016 had recently repeatedly demanded payments from the IOC.In July, the Organising Committee’s deficit had grown to around EUR 30 million.

The organisers had contacted the IOC because the city and the state of Rio were unable to meet their commitments of more than 26 million euros due to empty coffers in the face of the severe crisis in Brazil.
